Consumer Rights

The Federal Trade Commission is devoted to protecting consumers and preventing fraud. The FTC publishes "model notices" in compliance with the FCRA for credit reporting agencies to follow. Rules and regulations issued by the FTC are implemented to help consumers avoid misleading business operations.

The Federal Trade Commission has recently declared it will be "changing and updating" these credit report notices. These changes are designed for the benefit of the consumer. The FTC explained the purpose of these revisions is to make the notices, "more useful and easier to understand."

The FTC will be revising the Summary of Rights notice. This notice explains to consumers they have the right to receive a free credit report once a year and they have the right to dispute inaccurate information. These notices were last revised in 2004. Since then consumer fraud, identity theft and inaccurate credit reporting has magnified. In addition, two more model notices are being revised: The User Notice and Furnisher Notice. Both notices are supposed to act as a guide for users and furnishers so that they properly protect the consumer.

ICC appreciates the standard of practice placed by the FTC and all of the laws that prevent consumer fraud. Moreover these recent changes are especially interesting to ICC because the FTC wants to hear from the public before these updated notices are complete. The public can comment until September 21, 2010. Last time the FTC accepted comments by the public was in 2004 and  they recorded that 50 comments were received. FTC needs to hear from you.
