Purchasing a Business

Starting a business from scratch is not the only way to be a successful business owner. You can buy a business that someone else has established but no longer wants to run. Instead of risking your time, money and energy on a business idea that may not pan out, you can opt to pick up a business that is already generating revenue and has a customer base and employees ready to work. You may find a business that could be more profitable with your specific knowledge and plans, so you can earn even more money than you expected when you initially bought the business from its previous owner. The business' credit rating may be high enough that you will have no trouble finding financing, as you would experience if you were to have a start-up business.

Buying a  Business

Buying a previously owned business, much like buying a used car, has its risks and disadvantages. The initial capital you need to buy a business can be a deterrent, though it is likely less than you would spend over time if you pursued business ownership as a fresh entrepreneur. You will also have to spend a good amount of time researching the business to ensure that it is the best option for you and acquiring a team of advisers, legal and otherwise, to help you make a wise decision. There may be problems with the business that were not disclosed to you because there was no legal need to do so, or problems that may be new to you but were taken for granted by the previous owner. You may not be able to profit from every asset that you paid for and businesses can lose five to ten percent of their revenue in the year after a change of hands in ownership and management.

Even with these risks, it may be a better option for you to buy a new business rather than starting your own. You can have the satisfaction of successful business ownership when buying a pre-existing company if you research and reflect on possible gains thoroughly and diligently.
