The New York Yankees administrative office recently announced that a spreadsheet containing names, account numbers, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of ticket holders has spread all over the web in an email attachment. Why this happened is unclear but mainly because of human error. Who will get this information and what will they use it for? Use your imagination to think of all the options. Only a thief will use this information to their benefit. Ticketmaster explained that one concern is that now people can actually steal tickets that are paid for and belong to someone else. Only time will tell how this will impact season ticket holders. In the meantime, it is evident that everyone must monitor their bank statements, credit card bills and credit reports for fraud – frequently!
Sony PlayStation also announced an “illegal and unauthorized intrusion” of its internet based network. The personal information of 77 million users is now at risk including: names, addresses, birthdates and passwords. It is not yet known if credit card information was leaked too. While Sony is investigating how this happened and what to do about it, there is no preventing what already occurred. To date this is considered one of the largest occurrences of identity theft across the globe.
